MPC Rust Conversion at Millennium Linings
Rust Proofing is a generic industry term used in the automotive and other industries, for protection against rust or corrosion. For over 25 years, Millennium Linings has specialized in the application of protective coatings, including rust prevention protective coatings. We believe in using the right tool for the right job, which is why we carry and apply more types of automotive protective coatings than anyone else in the Midwest. Most rustproofing companies in the USA only carry one brand of rust prevention product, but we don’t. That’s because we put the customer’s needs first and don’t believe in a “one size fits all” mentality. Millennium carries both Polymer and oil based coatings so that we can recommend the correct application to our customers every time. In addition to carrying both types, you will find that our self-healing polymer undercoating and vehicle cavity protection is military grade. Both meeting military-specification certifications. In contrast, most rustproofing companies today are still using the same asphalt or rubber-based products that were developed in the 1960’s and 1970’s. These products are known to crack, chip, flake, and to even promote rust. They also require annual inspections for a warranty, which usually results in a missed inspection and voided warranty. The cheaper material and voided warranty provides the dealer with higher profits and no liability, all at the customers’ expense. Millennium is not like these other companies as we are part of the Legacy Network Dealer Group with Legacy Standards of Service to put the customers’ needs first. Even though Valugard makes both standard OEM approved and military-grade products, Millennium goes beyond customer expectations by utilizing the Military mil-spec products that exceed the OEM approved minimum standards. These protective products are applied using noninvasive methods, including specialized jet-atomization fogging equipment, among other specialized spray application equipment.
Rust Proofing (CAVITY WAX)
VG-101 Military Spec Cavity Rust Inhibitor | ValuGard: Rust Inhibitor Spray. Valugard VG-101 Rust Inhibitor is a military specification, amber-colored, solvent-borne, thixotropic, and corrosion preventative compound. It protects new vehicle’s fenders, hoods, doors, rocker panels, quarter panels, cab corners, bedsides, and tailgates/trunks against rust-through perforation. (See Warranty Certificate)
Rustproofing (UNDERCOATING)
VG-160 Military Spec Solvent Undercoating | ValuGard: Rust Inhibitor Spray. ValuGard VG-160 Undercoat is a military specification, black-colored, solvent and wax based, self-healing, and abrasion/corrosion resistant coating. It is applied to the underbody and wheel wells, if applicable, to protect factory anti-corrosion coatings (e-coat & paint) from damaging road exposure while insulating them from extreme temperatures and deadening road noise and vibration. It will not freeze, crack, pocket, and fail like outdated "rubberized" undercoats. ValuGard Undercoat is warranted for a lifetime against peeling, flaking, sagging, and rust-through perforation of underbody panels on new vehicles. (See Warranty Certificate)
RUST REMOVAL PROCESSES
Stopping Rust – The number one rule about rust, is that any hard coating, no matter how thick placed over rust, won’t stop the rust. This includes undercoatings, as they are meant to prevent rust from starting, not to stop it once it has formed. Standard hard-coating-like paints and primers merely hide it for a temporary amount of time. Only specialized coatings can stop rust and protect metals against further rust growth.
Why not just use products like POR15? In some applications, we can and do use products like this. However, they don’t work well in tight spaces like door panels, rocker panels, tail gates, and similar spaces. They are also far more expensive to apply in tight areas like these and may not provide 100% coverage. At Millenium, we believe in using the right tool for the right job, which is why we are one of the few rustproofing companies in the Midwest who carry and apply more than one product. We put the customers’ needs over our convenience. Offering and providing multiple products requiring a fully trained staff that can recognize and recommend the correct products as well as apply them correctly.
Why Rust Conversion
Once a vehicle begins to rust or corrode, there are only a few proven methods that work to remove the corrosion.
1. Complete Rust / Corrosion Removal - Cut rust or corrosion completely out and or replace it with new metal or dip the vehicle in a dip tank. This method is the only 100% guaranteed method; however, it’s also the most expensive. This often leaves it as an impractical option, unless it is done for a partial or full vehicle restoration.
2. Abrasive Rust / Corrosion Removal – Use of beed, dry ice, water, sand, coal slag, and other mediums to blast corrosion away. This method is also expensive, as it often requires vehicle disassembly. It also requires protection of areas not needing blasted, often leaving areas inside panels or in enclosed areas untouched. Additionally, it requires other protective coatings to be applied to prevent the return of corrosion.
3. Rust / Corrosion Conversion – Rust Conversion uses chemicals that react with rust/corrosion to convert the rust into a stable compound that no longer grows that can then be sealed to prevent further growth in the area. When applied by a skilled technician, it is the most economical option for those who want to try and turn back the years and preserve their vehicle in its current state. It can completely stop rust growth between panels in doors, rockers, and more. When completed at rust’s earliest stages, before the rust growth is out of control, this process can be up to 100% effective. Millennium has spent more than a decade developing a specialized and proven process for vehicle rust conversion applications “MPC Rust Conversion”. However, we will typically need the vehicle for up to four (4) days due to product-drying times. As part of this process, we typically utilize an oil-based topcoat to fully protect the vehicle.
4. Oil Based Rustproofing – This is the most economical way to slow down pre-existing rust growth. Although this method will not stop rust growth completely, it will slow it down by up to 90% when applied on an annual or specified basis. This gives the vehicle an extended life by displacing moisture and treating the surfaces with highly effective corrosion inhibitors. The corrosion inhibitors form an adsorbed (or bonded) layer on the metal surfaces. This microscopic layer acts like a series of tiny umbrellas, shielding the surfaces from water molecules. Just as a car battery will not work without its electrolyte, metal corrosion will not occur if moisture does not contact the metal. The unique way in which Rust Check protects from moisture allows it to stop rust before it begins. It does so by attacking the most prominent cause of rust utilizing both a low and high viscosity products which are similar in consistency to WD-40 and Lithium Grease.
RUST CONVERTER VG-420
VG 420 Rust Converter | ValuGard: Rust Inhibitor Spray. VG 420 Rust Converter is an organic complex liquid that chemically reacts with large amounts of rust when present on steel. Rust Converter will not harm or affect any non-rusted surface, instead penetrating and chemically converting iron oxide corrosion (rust) into a stable and non-active complex. This converted surface will take on a blue/black appearance and, when dry to the touch, is ready to be top coated to seal out the elements and prevent future rust.
